Ten Troubling Makeup Mistakes
So often we read about the latest, greatest ways to apply makeup, but we rarely know the correct technique to fix a mistake. Below are ten mistakes and quick-fixes.
Mistake #1:
Not applying moisturizer first. Moisturizer creates a smooth surface for applying the rest of your makeup. Finding one with an SPF will also help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
Mistake #2:
Not allowing moisturizer to absorb. Make sure your moisturizer is completely absorbed before applying any concealer, foundation, powder, or blush. If you apply too quickly, the makeup will slide right off.
Mistake #3:
Concealer is too light. You wear concealer to hide dark or uneven areas on your face. If your concealer is too light, you will once again be drawing attention to that area. Your concealer should only be one shade lighter than your skin color.
Mistake #4:
Foundation is too heavy. Applying too much foundation can make your skin look cakey, dirty, or unnatural. And unless it perfectly matches your skin color, too much foundation can increase your chances of that dreaded line on your jaw. If you need to tone it down, spray your face with a fine mist of water and blot with a tissue. Or, take a damp makeup sponge and blend evenly.
Mistake #5:
Lip liner is too dark. Only wear dark lip liner if you are wearing dark lipstick. Otherwise, you will look as if you have a ring around your mouth. Find a neutral-colored liner that will coordinate with your lipstick shades.
Mistake #6:
Lipstick is too dark. If your lipstick appears darker on your lips than in the tube, don't worry. Simply blot your lips then add a coat of a lighter shade. Or, after blotting, just add some lip gloss or lip balm for a more natural look.
Mistake #7:
Blush is too bright. A little blush goes a long way, so if your "natural" blush looks "unnatural" simply blend loose powder over the problem areas. Or if you don't have any loose powder handy, dab a cotton ball over the blush to pick up the excess blush.
Mistake #8:
Eyeliner is too thick. Too much eyeliner can look harsh. To soften the look, cover the line with a loose powder or a lighter shade of the eye shadow. Another option is to blend over the area with a brush, sponge-tip applicator, or q-tip.
Mistake #9:
Eyebrows are over-colored. The most flattering brow color is a shade or a shade and a half lighter than the darkest part of your hair. If your brow color is too dark, brush in a little loose powder, or take a toothbrush and lightly coat the brows with a neutral eye shadow and comb upward.
Mistake #10:
Sleeping with your makeup on. You've probably heard this since the first day you started wearing makeup. But it's still a common mistake. Your pores will get clogged if you forget to wash and your chances of a breakout increases.
