In addition to eating ‘good carbs’ such as beans, chickpeas and lentils that help kick start your body to use up stored fat and still keep you feeling full, there are other techniques that can help you conquer your hunger once and for all. Try to incorporate these suggestions into a healthy, balanced, low-fat diet.
Mind Games
If you can’t convince yourself that one portion is enough, you’ll simply have to trick your body into thinking you’re ingesting more than you really are. Fill up your plate with items that look large and your brain assumes are satiating, but that are low in calories. Or if you always tend to want a second helping, fill your plate first and then remove about half of the food to save for later. Once you finish your first helping, you can finish your ‘seconds’—the second half of your meal—guilt-free. Or you can intentionally eat more slowly, or choose foods that take a longer time to eat, t fool your brain into thinking you’ve eaten more. People who actively trick their brain into thinking they are eating more can save up to 800 calories a day without extra feelings of hunger.
Filling Treats
If you need more than an optical illusion on your plate to convince your body that you don’t need to eat more, here are a few suggestions for foods that make you feel full.
Pesto: Pine nuts are known to release an appetite-suppressing hormone and can keep you feeling full for up to 4 hours longer! However, they are high in fat and calories, so eat sparingly.
Apples: Fiber is essential to
weight loss, and eating one apple a day can provide you with the additional fiber you need to prolong your fullness.
Dark Chocolate: Reduce your cravings with the help of dark chocolate, which releases a rush of endorphins to your brain. Don’t overdo it, though, as this sweet treat is still high in sugar, fat and calories.
